What does the largest extreme obstacle course in Canada look like? Well, marblemedia and Corus Entertainment are going to show you in their newest physical game show Splatalot.

“Splatalot is all about the hilarity of watching contestants get splattered, with the best spills instantly replayed in slow motion,” said Matt Hornburg, the series Co- Creator and Partner, marblemedia. “With oversized props, cool special effects and lively characters, it’s sure to be a highly-entertaining adventure.”

marblemedia has a production ranch just north of Orangeville where they will be producing Splatalot.

“What we found is that by working in a smaller community outside of downtown Toronto that we just tend to have a greater ease of doing business,” said Mr. Hornburg. “We’re able to hire a lot of local people to be involved in the production and in this case both in front and behind the camera as we look to finding local kids who can appear in the show and compete for prizes.”

He commented that marblemedia is “looking for kids who want to be on television, are extremely enthusiastic, competitive, want to have a really fun great time and are willing to give it their all when they try and compete on this course.”

The game show is geared to the 8- to 12- year-old audience. Splatalot will air on YTV in Canada, BBC in the U.K. and ABC in Australia with 26 episodes in the series. Three versions will be filmed and customized for the participating countries. Two hosts will be selected from all three countries’ places to comment on the contestants’ wipeouts and successes.

“We’re very excited to be working with our longtime partner, Corus Entertainment, as well as with our new partners at the BBC and ABC, on this first-time multi-broadcaster collaboration,” said Mr. Hornburg.

Each episode will feature a different group of 12 teen contestants seeking to come out on top of the competition.

Contestants are dubbed Attackers, they will compete against each other in three different rounds: Cross the Moat, Storm the Castle and Steal the Crown. Six international, medieval-themes gladiators, The Defenders of Splatalot, will be doing everything in their power to protect the castle from the contestants- Attackers.

“What is kind of unique about our show as it relates to the kid audience is the fact that there is a lot of physical comedy involving real kids who can compete for prizes on a challenge course that is really the biggest of its kind in Canada,” said Mr. Hornburg.

According to Mr. Hornburg, the obstacle course is “pretty big.” In its entirety it stands just under four stories high and covers roughly 200 square feet.

The production crew is currently in the process of designing and building all the props and obstacles. Participants will be running into some really abstract obstacles on this course.

“We’d like for it to be a surprise, but what I can say is there are a lot of mechanical elements,” said Mr. Hornburg.

A lot of the elements of Splatalot are still in the planning faze, including the signature look.

Mr. Hornburg commented that the costume at the present time is a hybrid of medieval theme and ensuring proper safety equipment for contestants.

The obstacle course is “quite rigorous”; helmets and shoulder pads will be among the equipment worn by contestants.

“Safety is our utmost priority as TV producers who have produced a lot of reputable shows for children in Canada,” said Mr. Hornburg. “It’s always our top priority.”

The show’s creators have included a wide variety of aspects to safety.

“We have a safety coordinator who reviews all of the challenges, we do a lot of testing of the challenges well in advance of finalizing the set. Our challenge producer who helps us design the projects has helped (marblemedia) in the past with our other shows,” said Mr. Hornburg. “He has worked on a lot of shows like survivor and the amazing race.”

There will also be a paramedic and lifeguard on set the entire time.

According to Mr. Hornburg, the show will be airing sometime next spring. He encourages local kids to come out and be involved in something they will remember for the rest of their lives.
