Orangeville Citizen/Free Press and Economist Kings shutout Merchants and Knights
Orangeville Kings continue to roll up the wins in intercounty fastball play. For the Kings, it's been the defense that has been the star of the past two games, posting back-to-back shutouts against Arthur and Maryhill.
First up, it was Orangeville making their last regular season appearance against the Merchants in Arthur last Wednesday evening.
Rich Long got things moving in the right direction for Orangeville off the top of one when he made his first trip to the plate with the bases already loaded and chipped a single which was enough to score Kent Campbell and Phil Gordon to give the Kings a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Gordon's triple would cash in Kings lead-off batter Campbell before Greg Hickey brought Gordon home from third with a single.
Kyle Anderson went the distance pitching for Orangeville tossing out just four hits while striking out 8 on the way to a 4-0 Kings victory.
Back home at Idlewyld Park Tuesday night against Maryhill, Orangeville continued its winning ways.
Scott Gordon would get the nod to start on the mound for the home squad and set the tone early striking out a pair and combining with his defense for the third out. In Kings half of the first, Jeff Donaldson cashed two on a bases loaded single before Mike Lake hit a double scoring Long from second to make it 3-0.
In the fifth, a double to deep left centre field off Mike Brooks’ bat scored a pair for Orangeville to make it 5-0 and there the score would remain as reliever Joel Pegg held the Knight’s hitless while fanning four to earn the save with the Kings recording their 12th victory of the year by a final score of 5-0.
Orangeville takes to the mound next Tuesday when they host Puslinch in a 9 p.m. start at Idlewyld.
