A’s play-off bound

Seven weeks and 22 games after they started, the Rayburn Construction have wrapped up the regular season schedule and are shifting gears into playoff mode.

For the Northmen, their first round opponent will be the Peterborough Lakers who finished eighth in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior A standings.

It's a small touch of irony for Orangeville as it was Peterborough who the Northmen kicked off their 2010 campaign against with a 17-8 win back on May 14th.

Northmen coach Matt Sawyer knows however despite their final placing in the standings combined with Orangeville wins in both regular season outings between the two teams, this won't be a cake walk.

"Peterborough will be a tough opponent for sure. They are a good team and you can't take anything for granted,” says Sawyer. One thing he does say is that they will be looking to make the most of home floor advantage - to start the series off on the right foot with a win at the Tony Rose on Sunday.

Injuries have plagued the Northmen roster throughout the year, Sawyer expects that with the exception of Craig England and Matt Eckert who are officially out for the season, his team should be back up to full strength within the week. That obviously would include the return of Greg Harnett as well as the long awaited 2010 debut of Adam Jones.

Even with the return of Jones and the stellar play of goaltender Dylan Ward this season, Sawyer is quick to point out that their success will come only with a total team effort.

"We are the defending champs and the number one target in everyone's sights so if we are going to be successful in defending our Ontario Championship as well as the Minto title, we are going to need everyone there and playing their best.”

For the Northmen, the defense of that Ontario Championship begins in earnest at 7:30p.m this Sunday night when the Northmen host the Lakers in game one of their best-of-seven, OLA quarter-final series before heading up to Peterborough for game two on Tuesday.
