1st round TKO for McGuinness
Local boxing fans definitely had something to cheer about this past weekend as a couple of young pugilists with Orangeville roots pounded their opponents into submission at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga this past Saturday.
Leading the way was 22 year-old Logan Cotton McGuinness who took only two minutes and seventeen seconds to totally destroy his opponent, former Quebec champion Jorge Bannos.
With a largely partisan crowd spurring him on, McGuinness came out swinging with a flurry of body blows that had Bannos backed into the ropes. Dropping his guard to try and protect his body only opened up another target for McGuinness who then delivered a series of combinations to the head that sent Bannos to the mat for the first time about one minute into the match.
Barely back on his feet, Bannos again came under attack from a barrage of head and body shots, which returned him to the ground, and another close-up view of the canvas.
For Bannos, beating the 10-count a second time would be his last small victory of the night.
With his opponent battered and backed into the corner, McGuinness closed in for the kill, unleashing yet another volley of precision placed punishment which was enough to prompt Banno's corner to toss in the towel, ending the fight at the 2:17 mark of the first round.
Speaking with media sources after the fight, McGuinness said he was thrilled to step into the ring for the first time of his pro career before the hometown fans. "I can't even describe the feeling I got when I looked out from the corner of the family and friends there from Orangeville there to support me. This is a win for them and all of Ontario."
This was the second win over Bannos for McGuinness and with this victory, his undefeated record improves to 11-0-1.
Orangeville's other up and coming young boxer on the same card, Ryan Wagner was also victorious on Saturday night.
Taking to the ring against Chris Aucoin who came into the ring with a 3-3-1 record, Wagner looked much more confidant than he did in his first pro bout.
Picking away at his opponent through the first and second rounds, Wagner landed a monster overhead right to Aucoin's temple, which sent him straight to the canvass where he stayed for the count to earn Wagner his second career victory.
