The Rayburn Construction Junior A Northmen are off to round two of the 2010 playoffs.
After hitting a speed bump in game two of their best-of-five quarter final series against Peterborough, an 8-4 loss to the Lakers, Orangeville came back with a vengeance this past weekend. First on Friday night back home in the familiar confines of the Tony Rose, Northmen snipers out scored the Lakers 17-2 before returning to Peterborough on Saturday night, where Orangeville wrapped up the series with an 11- 4 decision.
Rob Hellyer held the hot hand on Friday night with four goals and one assist, while Pat Saunders also was front and centre of the action with three goals and four assists.
Mike Teeter collected a pair on the night while Brock Sorensen, Brad Gillies, Jordan Critch, Deron Dempster, Adam Jones, Andrew Suitor, Glen Bryan and Cody McMahon rounded off the scoring with one goal apiece.
Dylan Ward continued to provide strong goaltending between the pipes for Orangeville turning away 31 of 33 shots along the way to the 17- 2 win.
In game four, the Lakers did their best to stay with the Northmen as much as they could and actually held a slim 1-0 lead until midway through the opening frame, before Orangeville shooters started to find the range.
First, it was Jones and Critch, before Sorensen and Jones again dropped a pair between two from Lakers’ Spencer Janes. Teeter scored his fourth of the playoffs giving Orangeville a 5-3 lead to start the second.
From that point on however, there was no doubt who would be the winner as Orangeville continued to wind up the score. By the time it was all over, Dempster, Saunders, Suitor and Gillies had each chipped in singles while two power-play markers by Brandon Ivey proved more than enough for Orangeville to finally take the series by posting an 11-4 win.
Speaking after the series, Northmen coach Matt Sawyer was pleased with the way his team regrouped after the loss in game two, "got back to playing a good team offence while doing a good job back in our own end."
Looking forward to the next round which begins Wednesday night against Burlington (results unavailable at presstime), Sawyer knows this promises to be some really exciting lacrosse. " This is a really good match-up for us. As you know, they play us tough every time and we expect them to come ready to play."
The series starts on Wednesday night in Orangeville then heads to Burlington for game two Friday night before returning to the Tony Rose arena where the two teams will take to the floor at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.
On Friday, Dairy Queen will also be on hand at the Northmen game selling Dilly Bars and ice cream sandwiches for $2 with proceeds going to the Dairy Queen Miracle Treat day in support of Sick Kids Hospital.
