Athletic 2-0 over Barrie

The Orangeville Athletic improved their record with a 2-0 win over the Barrie Spirit at Rotary Park in Orangeville on Thursday night.

The premier division club now has four wins and two ties on their record after 13 games in the regular season but continues to struggle and are in sixth place in the York Region Soccer League’s top division standings.

That leaves them with 14 points - nine ahead of Barrie who are in the basement with two-thirds of the regular season now in the books.

The Orangeville squad has regrouped after forfeiting the previous week in Bradford when injuries and slick conditions on the field forced them to call it a day at the end of the first half.

The Athletic have played with a short roster for most of the season.

Thursday’s game under the lights turned in the Athletic’s favour early in the first half when a cross goal kick caught the Barrie goal keeper way out of position and gave Orangeville attacker Giulio Baldassarra a wide open opportunity to score.

Another goal by Gavin Hill gave the Athletic some insurance and the Spirit couldn’t get past their defence for any real scoring opportunities for the rest of the game.

With five matches left on the schedule, the Athletic are going into the final stretch with some tough games ahead of them including a date with the first place Collingwood United.

The United have suffered only two losses this season and lead the pack with 28 points followed by Owen Sound with 23 points for the season so far.

The Athletic will face the Internationals this weekend on Sun., Aug. 8, with a 7:00 p.m. at the Bradford arena soccer pitch followed up the next day with a late away game against the fourth place Innisfil SC.

Their next home game is scheduled for Thursday August 12, against Collingwood at Rotary Park.

The kick off for the game is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
