Bengals win junior division title in double elimination
The Orangeville Bengals captured the North Dufferin Baseball League junior division championship on Sunday winning the title in a two-day double elimination tournament in Bolton.
The Bengals led the league in regular season play ending with an 8-10-1 record followed by the Bolton Braves (6-13-0) and the Midland Twins (5-13-1).
Bolton was knocked out of the tournament early after losing both their Saturday games leaving Orangeville and Midland to battle it out for the cup.
A big effort in the sixth inning of the first Bengals / Twins game on Saturday gave Orangeville a seven run lead when Travis Rumney hit a double to drive two base runners across home plate.
An infield error by the Twins cost another two runs.
The Bengals opened the scoring in the second inning when Nick Hodgson drove deep to mid field and made it to third base driving in a single run.
Orangeville left the field with an 8-1 win and a game advantage going into the best of three final on Sunday. In the first inning of game two Midland held off Orangeville when they loaded the bases, but they couldn’t follow up leaving three men on base at the end of the inning. A single run in the second inning and five more in the third gave the Bengals the edge at the halfway mark.
