Shelburne fire board seeks Mono’s help

By DAN PELTON Staff Reporter

Representatives of the Shelburne and District Fire Board approached Mono Council Tuesday to ask for the town’s assistance in financing a replacement for a 21-yearold pumper truck.

Chair Bill Cowie and board member Walter Benotto explained that between $800,000 and $1 million will be required to acquire and accommodate a “quint” – a fire truck that will be best suited for the board’s needs.

It is referred to as a quint because it performs five different functions. One feature is a large ladder that will help firefighters safely combat fires in buildings over three stories tall.

“In our area, we have houses that are over three stories,” said Mr. Benotto. “We also have barns that are large structures.”

As well, he pointed out that additions will be needed to the fire hall in Shelburne, adding that they have had word from the Department of Labour that such changes will be needed.

“We’re not trying to expand the fire department,” Mr. Benotto explained. “We’re trying to keep what we have running along.”

It is estimated that Mono’s share would be 10.8 per cent of the cost. The share is based on a formula involving the number of homes and the number of potential calls.

“Have you considered looking into buying a second hand truck?” posed Councillor Jean Castel. Mr. Cowie replied that it is a second-hand vehicle they are looking at.

“We have to purchase this truck down the road,” said Mr. Benotto. “We’re going to all the councils (to say) this is going to happen.”

Added Mr. Cowie: “We’re not looking for an answer from you, today. But the longer we wait, the more it is going to cost.”
