‘Easy to see why’ writer was anonymous
It is easy to see why the author of the letter to the editor entitled “Writer opposes DEEP project” chose to remain anonymous by signing it “A Concerned Citizen”; to avoid being held responsible for an article filled with falsehoods and misinformation.
Your editorial page does not have sufficient size to permit the rebuttal and refutation of all the errors that appear in “Writer opposes DEEP project” but will point out just a few.
The letter states, “It is interesting to note that there is no Melancthon representative on this CDC Council”. In fact the Mayor of the Township of Melancthon, Her Worship Debbie Fawcett has sat on the Dufferin Community Development Committee for over three years.
The letter states,”CDC have received $50,000 seed money from Dufferin County with additional funds from Developers.”
The Community Development Committee has received no money from Developers.
The letter states, “If Shelburne voted in favor of DEEP, along with Orangeville, then they would get majority vote of 16 out of 30 votes.”
The solid municipal waste that will feed the energy-fromwaste facility, that is an integral component of the DEEP project, currently is under the control of local municipal councils. To have this solid municipal waste transfer to the jurisdiction of the County of Dufferin requires the support of 5 of the 8 local councils that represent more that 50% of the electors in addition to the majority of the votes at Dufferin County Council. The approval of Shelburne and Orangeville representatives or councils cannot alone make the DEEP project happen as it is currently envisioned.
The letter states, “Human waste is to be renamed compost. Peel is interested in sending us their compost.” The County of Dufferin and the Region of York have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop an organic waste treatment facility as part of the DEEP project to convert organic waste into compost.
The residents of Peel Region have not expressed any interest in participating in this proposed organic waste treatment facility although they have for the past 5 years been kind enough to accept the organic waste that we in Dufferin create, at their organic waste treatment facility in Caledon.
I am unaware that the Dufferin Community Development Committee will be renaming human waste.
These are the falsehoods that appear in “Writer opposes DEEP project” that can most succinctly be refuted. The reader should question that if the “Concerned Citizen” was untruthful and incorrect about these known facts and procedural requirements, why would you believe anything else in this anonymous letter to the editor?
