Amaranth had a birth on the go
How often in the past century or so has a nurse delivered a baby on the shoulder of Amaranth’s 20 Sideroad, let alone a registered practical nurse from England?
Probably never, until 3:20 a.m. August 27, when Lucy Summers performed the delivery for Katie, the 6 lb. 6 oz. second daughter for 19-year-old Kelly Horne and her partner, Brandon Holyer.
Perhaps it’s a stretch to say “RPN from England,” but Ms. Summers is from England and is qualified as such across the pond but not in Canada.
She’s a resident of East Luther and a receptionist at the Mel Lloyd Centre’s medical team in Shelburne.
For Ms. Horne, who resides at the Summers residence, it must have been an easy birth.
Her water broke at 3 a.m., and Katie wouldn’t wait for her arrival at Headwaters Health Care Centre. Instead, she decided to emerge along 20 Sideroad.
“I delivered the placenta,” said Ms. Summers. Following the birth, Ms. Horne remained at the hospital for less than a full day.
“There was no IV and no tearing,” Ms. Summers said.
The 27th of the month will forever be embedded in Ms. Summers’s memory. “We had cremated my father in England exactly one month earlier (on July 27),” she said.
But that’s not all. In the excitement of the moment at Headwaters, she locked her keys in her car.
