ACTS Elites capture bronze at provincials

Photo/BRIAN LOCKHART The U16 ACTS Elites Boys Rep Team brought home a Tier II provincial bronze medal after competing in the 2010 Ontario Volleyball Provincials in Waterloo.
The Elites defeated the Kingston Predators 25-17, 25,12 to take the third position.
The squad had success earlier this year winning silver at the McGregor Cup and a bonze at the Waterloo Warrior open.
Going to the provincials the club brought in three new players who worked with the team prior to the tournament.
Will Hoey, Ryan Barnett and Erin Dela Crue, joined up and started in with practice.
The coaching staff had the squad focus on defence and blocking in the three months prior to the tournament with a strategy that would stop an attack and set up the offence.

During the three day provincial tournament the Elites lost game one to Guelph setting up a tough second day where a losing team would be relegated to a tier II level.
The final match of the day pitted the Elites against the Chatham Ball- Hawks - both undefeated for the day.
The Ball-Hawks managed a third set win over the Elites with a 16-25, 25-20, 10-15 series to advance.
Elites veterans Adam Tomkins, Andrew Mavcock, Robbie Holden, Eric Vastag, and Patrick Clark, were noted as having stellar performances by the coaching staff.
Day three of the tournament saw the Elites turn it up a notch defeating the provinces’ fifth ranked Windor Riverside Rage 23-25, 25-9, 16,14.
Markus Trence was outstanding on the offen- sive play with Mathew Fontana and rookie Jason Grimm getting credit for some key points.
The semi-final round resulted in the Elites losing to the Kingston Pegasus 25-22, 19-25, 14- 16, to take the bronze.
ACTS Elites’ Markus Trence was awarded the Ontario Volleyball Associations’ Award of Excellence after the tournament. The 2010/11 season tryouts begin Thursday, September 16. You can find out more information by visiting the club website at www.actselites.com.
