The Shelburne “Russian” Redwings notched win number seven on Friday after leaving the ice with a 6-3 win over the Vaughan Wild at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Centre in Shelburne.
After playing to a 1-1 tie the first period the Redwings let loose in the second period scoring three to start the third period with a three goal advantage.
Vladislav Almov scored the Redwings first period goal.
Denis Zverev put the Redwings in the lead at just 19 seconds into the second period.
That was followed up by a short handed effort by Alexander Nikulnikov, and a fourth Redwings goal by Pavel Bistyaykin when he fired a rocket from the point that found its way to the back of the net.
Nikulnikov scored his second of the game early in the third period.
The Wild managed a single in the last frame on
powerplay when Josh LeFrance did a wrap around from behind and
managed to slot one in for Vaughan`s third of the game.
But a final goal by Shelburne`s Zverev - his second of the game - put the cap on the win for the Redwings.
The Redwings out shot the Wild 45-35.
But in the box, the Shelburne team managed to sit out 16 minutes on minors, with half of those minutes coming in the third period, while the Wild only spent four minutes off the ice with slashing and tripping calls.
“We dominated a big part of the game,” said Redwings head coach Jim Aldred. “We let down a few things, but it’s starting to work out, they’re starting to work as a team now.``
Considering this is the first year for squad it usually takes a while for a team to gel, but Aldred sees a lot of improvement.
“They’re picking up speed, I’m happy with that,” Aldred says, “The biggest thing with these kids is working as a team. They’re all from out of town. They just have to get into the team spirit, and we’ve been working on that in practice a lot.”
After the weekend the Redwings are in fifth spot in the 13 team Greater Metro Hockey League with 15 points.
They currently have a 7-5 record and one overtime loss.
South Muskoka is currently in the lead and is undefeated after 13 games, followed by Elliot Lake who have suffered only one loss and one overtime loss after 14 games in the regular season.
The Redwings have two home games this coming weekend.
On Friday, November 5, they will face the Bobcaygeon Bucks with a 8:30 p.m. start.
They return the following night, Saturday, November 6, to take on the Oro-Medonte 77’s.
The puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
