Dzakhov nets five against
The Shelburne Redwings squeezed out a win over the Oro-Medonte 77’s on home ice at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Friday after the visitors came back twice to tie it up and forced the game down to the final nine minutes of play.
But the big story in this game was Stanislav Dzakhov having a six point game.
Dzakhov netted five goals including the winner and one assist against the Oro-Medonte squad.
After leading 4-2 at the end of the first period on three goals by Dzakhov and a single on a powerplay effort by Denis Zverev the Shelburne team came up empty in the second period and the 77’s returned to tie it up with a pair to make it 4-4 going into the final twenty minutes.
That included a bullet fired by Alex Rigby from outside the blue line that rifled through the crowd and into the net.
The Redwings were back in the saddle early in the third frame on a fourth goal by Dzakhov and single by Alexander Nikulnikov on a powerplay.
But the pressure was back on when the 77’s scored two more at the midway mark in the period to again tie it up.
Redwings head coach Jim Aldred called a 30 second time out to have the squad regroup before going out an finishing it off.
“I told them we have to go back to our systems,” Aldred said. “Regroup, don’t panic, and just do your job out there. Stop running around and playing our defensive style, and just go out there and do your thing and it will come.”
And it did.
Dzakhov got the final goal with just under five minutes left on the clock to give Shelburne the 7-6 win.
Aldred said having the time off over the holidays may have let the team a little slow on their feet.
“I didn’t expect too much,” he said. “We’ve been off for two weeks. We didn’t play at all through Christmas. Our last game was in Deseronto, from then on we didn’t play until tonight.”
The following night the team travelled to Sturgeon Falls and left with a 9-1 win over the Lumberjacks.
The Redwings took full command of the game scoring five times in the first period to pretty much leave a comeback out of reach for the home team.
Goal number six came early in the second period and so did a slew of penalties.
The game ended with the Redwings placing three more to the back of the net in the third period.
The Lumberjacks finally lit up the scoreboard with a single with 2:39 left on the clock.
The Redwings have one game this coming weekend.
On Friday, January 14 they host the Bradford Rattlers.
The puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
