Hello again and welcome back to my weekly Shelburne Muskie update.
It is hard to believe that we only have two games left in the 2011/2012 season, it has really gone by fast.
This coming weekend the Shelburne Muskies play Saturday in Lucknow, then on Sunday we have a semi home game in Dundalk at 4:30 p.m. against the team we will most likely be playing in the first round of the upcoming playoffs - the Mapleton- Minto 81’s.
This past weekend we had mixed results, on Friday night in front of the home crowd we played one of our best games of this season. Although we were playing the last place team, the Walkerton Capitals, in this league anything is possible and any team can win on any given night.
On Friday night, we came out focused and ready to go, we are a fast team and when we use our speed properly, we are almost unbeatable.
We did everything right against the Capitals and they didn’t get too many quality scoring chances, in the end we won 8-0 and secured our second shutout of this season.
I know in the NHL you see shutouts on a weekly basis, but in Senior A hockey, a shutout is a very rare occurrence and our goalies Dave Davenport and Breton Mckinnon should be very proud of themselves.
On Saturday night we travelled North to Shallow Lake to play a rare Saturday road game.
If we have been guilty of one bad habit lately it is getting off to a slow start in some games. Well this was certainly an issue against Shallow Lake as we immediately got behind and never recovered.
Shallow Lake has the smallest ice surface in the league so once they get a lead, they do a very good job of shutting things down and taking away an opposing teams time and space.
We left Shallow Lake with a 5-4 loss and hopefully a little wake up call that we can’t afford anymore sluggish starts.
With playoffs right around the corner, everyone’s focus has to be razor shape right from the drop of the puck.
Going into the final weekend of the regular season, the Muskies still have a chance to finish third in our division but we need some help from other teams.
It should make for an exciting weekend. We hope to see everyone on Sunday in Dundalk.
