Controversial but appropriate
NOT EVERY HOUSEHOLDER in Dufferin County is likely to favour the proposed move to a universal, singleclear bag system for household solid waste (garbage) disposal. But who needs more than one bag a week for garbage if recyclables and organics are picked up as separate waste “streams?”
Opposition can be expected in a parts of the county that allow up to four garbage bags per pickup, and clear bags might not be to the liking of people used to opaque bags. (The implication is that one cannot place Blue Box and Green Bin materials in a clear bag and expect it to be collected as though it were solid waste. It might be left behind.)
The use of clear bags, and the ultimate requirement for household waste to be disposed of in three streams, is going to demand widespread adjustments. With the Green Bin program now in place for several years, a cursory glance at any urban street on collection day would suggest residents are divided in their opinion of the program.
It is, however, vitally important to conserve resources on a world-wide scale by way of recycling and reusing to the fullest extent.
In Dufferin, there is a clear need not only to practise the “three Rs,” but also to standardize waste collection across eight municipalities in the interests of cost and environmental considerations.
We applaud the Community Development Committee, and can only hope that the full county council is in agreement when it meets next Thursday evening.
