107 YEARS YOUNG:
Ethel Mason and son Jack Mason are shown making the first cut for Ms. Mason’s 107th birthday last Friday, February 17th, at Avalon Retirement Centre in Orangeville. Volunteers, Avalon staff members and residents joined Ms. Mason and her family for snacks and cake, and Mayor Rob Adams and MPP Sylvia Jones presented Ms. Mason with plaques and scroll. Believed to be one of the oldest Orangeville-area residents, “She’s a pretty spectacular woman for 107, she’s more cognitive than most people even my age so she’s a delightful woman,” said Sherry Braic, Avalon’s Life Enrichment coordinator. “I just think it’s pretty spectacular that she’s been able to live to 107 and be where she’s at health-wise.” The Elora native had three sisters and one brother. She married and had six children of her own, four of whom are still living and have families of their own. Asked what her fondest birthday memory was, Ms. Mason said without any hesitation it would have to be her 16th birthday, which came with a few liberties that she hadn’t had before including going to a monthly party. She says that, to her, birthdays are about family and friends getting together and having a good time. “It’s pretty nice of them to go to all of this trouble, I am pretty grateful for it, and thankful.”
