on www.citizen. on. ca Re: Highland, town renew railway sale deal - “I strongly urge Orangeville council and all residents/property owners/and businesses in Orangeville and area to think what will happen not only to our quality of life [noise, dust, incredibly clogged roads, etc.] if we do anything to encourage the Highland Company plans - but also to think what the Highland Company's mega quarry would do to our property values.”

“Short-sighted money-grabbing politics are the name of the game in Orangeville. A rail line is a valuable right of way. It is likely that Orangeville's (/Dufferin's/Ontario's) infrastructure will need such land in the future and it will be up to future governments to expropriate/pay-through-the-nose for land that was formerly sold for peanuts. The rail line was handed over to The People. . .”

“Are we opening Pandora's Box? I hope that the residents of Orangeville and surrounding communities scrutinize this article and do some research on the potentially negative impact that this sale will have on their communities. Is it in our best interests to further enable the Highland Companies' agenda? I know it's not . . .”

“Here we have another in the endless line of acts against the citizens of this area, which are brought upon us by a very few who are in a position of personal gain! It really upsets me to see one person (or a select few) making decisions that affect so many of us in an ill manner. . .”

“Don’t listen to the fear mongers..... this in an excellent opportunity for the community. A lot less trucks on the road & less green house gases. Will attract industry and JOBS back to Dufferin County. Two thumbs up for Orangeville, now if we can Dufferin to get their head out of their you know what we would be cookin.”

“We are DEFINITELY not in favour of the sale of the railway line to Highland Companies. Rob Adams appears not to care about any of the neighbours to the n.s,e, and w of Orangeville, nor for the Orangevillians and visitors who will be forced to suffer the damages done by the quarry. Possibly, these 'outsiders' should begin a boycott of Orangeville enterprises to show Rob Adams they don't think his judgement is very good on this issue. Rob should remember that Highlands was initially a 'potato operation' - their cover to allow them entry to the properties. . .” more on-line

Your article on the

Your article on the elimination of the gun registry was short on facts. People need to understand why this wasteful system is being eliminated. Throughout the debate we heard a lot of lies about the American NRA lobbying for registry elimination. We heard proponents euphemistically state the registry was a "useful tool" without being able to point to one life it had saved. There's more evidence to suggest the registry contributed to the deaths of at least one young police officer in Montreal. She trusted it, knocked on a door thinking there were no guns present and was shot dead. The motives of the of Chiefs of Police were also in question. Their organization lobbied against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They are in favour of Bill C30 that will allow warrantless searches of citizens internet communications, and for all their crying the chiefs couldn't come out with any realistic numbers to support their pro-registry position. Studies of rank and file officers showed they were at odds with the brass, preferring not to rely on the registry. It's not just the gun registry that is the problem. The Canadian Firearms Act allows for warrantless police searches of the homes of innocent gun owners. The mere hint of a possiblility that a gun is present can send police crashing through your front door. Last week a Jesse Sansone of Kitchener was arrested at a public school because his 4 year old daughter crayoned a picture of him with a gun. "He uses it to scare away monsters" she said. The police, school and child welfare screwballs went berzerk. His home was searched without a warrant. A similar case happened in Winnipeg last month when someone phoned in a false complaint about a man with a shotgun. Andrew Lyons was arrested and his elderly parents kicked out of their house while machine-gun equipped police SWAT teams ransacked it looking for a supposed gun. There wasn't one. That's our Firearm Act at work again, and why MP Larry Miller compared the legislation to something out of 1930s Germany. There are a lot of arguments for gun laws in Canada but the science is on the side of the gun owners. Expensive registries, bureaucratic licensing, unwarranted searches of private homes - regardless have had no effect on crime in Canada according to an ever wider pool of accredited, published studies by acclaimed criminologists. Nobody has a magic wand, but good law enforcement and putting violent criminals in jail an leaving them there has more proven statistical weight at reducing crime than anti-gun laws do. After all, criminals don't care about laws. Gun owners will continue to work to have the Firearms Act revised so that is is more efficient and better reflects this free and democratic society we live in. Eliminating the registry is just one small step in that direction, and we thank the Conservatives for their understanding.
