Arrest made in violent Amaranth break-in
On Feb. 17, at 2:50 p.m., Dufferin OPP responded to a report of a violent break-in on Dufferin County Road 10.
The 80-year old victim had surprised a male suspect on the main floor of his home and was assaulted before the man fled the scene. The male suspect took two jewellery boxes and fled eastbound on County Road 10 in a waiting vehicle.
The victim immediately contacted police to report the incident and gave a detailed description of the vehicle. A check of vehicle licence plates through the Provincial Communications Centre alerted police to the vehicle’s description and owner, and the Dufferin-Nottawasaga OPP Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Unit were called in to assist Dufferin OPP in their investigation.
As a result of the thorough investigation Dufferin OPP, assisted by Orangeville Police arrested 33-year old Shawn Bigger of Orangeville at Headwaters Health Care Centre on Monday, February 20. He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000; bobbery with a weapon, breaking and entering a dwelling house and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.
He was remanded in custody
