Doctors support turbines, criticize fossil, nuclear options

The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) is describing Health Canada’s study of health impacts from wind turbines as “superfluous (and) a waste of time and a waste of public funds.”

“It’s curious Health Canada has taken an interest in studying the health impacts of something as benign as wind energy when for years health and environment experts have been cautioning about the negative impacts of fossil fuels on human health,” Farrah Khan of CAPE says.

CAPE says a 2010 Ontario study “reviewed 40 years of scientific research on wind turbines and human health.”

It noted that the report by Chief Medical Officer Arlene King report concluded that “the scientific evidence available to date does not demonstrate a direct causal link between wind turbine noise and adverse health effects.”

“She also found that ‘community engagement at the outset of planning for wind turbines is important and may alleviate health concerns about wind farms.’ This puts any physiological impact from the very ordinary sound of a windmill into serious doubt.”

Community involvement was at the heart of the plan for what has become Dufferin Wind Power, originally totally owned by a group of Melancthon farmers and 401 Energy of Markham but now owned largely by a Chinese company.

Much of the criticism levelled by opponents of that development centres on foreign ownership, but the alleged health impacts haven’t been forgotten. Persons affected say they are genuinely ill since the advent of other wind farms in the area.

A question asked at a recent information meeting was, in effect, “If the turbines didn’t cause the illness, why did we become ill after they went into operation?”

A multi-disciplinary study commissioned by the Canadian and American wind energy associations recently found that the most serious effect on nearby residents was “annoyance.” And the degree of annoyance was related to how the person felt about turbines prior to development.

On the other hand, according to CAPE, “Canada’s health community is shocked at the growing evidence of illness connected to the fossil fuels industry. In 2009, the Alberta Cancer Board reported cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan, downstream from the tar sands, were 30 per cent higher than expected.”

CAPE quotes the Ontario Clean Air Alliance as saying that in 2009, coal plants in the province “were connected to 246 deaths, 342 hospital admissions, 406 costly emergency room visits and almost 123,000 illnesses such as asthma attacks.”

While turbine health impacts continue to be debated, CAPE says the health impacts of coal are a certainty.

It is also critical of the health risks posed by nuclear radioactive waste. “Spent fuel remains highly toxic and radioactive for thousands of years. But nuclear reactors, even in their normal day-to-day operations, emit radiation. A 2008 German government study found an elevated risk of leukemia for children living within five kilometres of the country’s 16 nuclear plants.”

Although preferring wind energy, CAPE acknowledges that any form of energy production inevitably has some negative impact on the plane, noting that wind turbines are not perfect, generate some sound and their appearance is not pleasing to everyone.

“But coal-fired generating stations, nuclear power plants and the tar sands all contribute to serious illness.

“We’re comparing a minor annoyance from the sound of blowing wind to the severity of cancer, asthma and brain damage. Our energy choices do impact our health and renewables like wind are our safest bets,” CAPE concludes.

As someone horribly affected

As someone horribly affected by EMF (Electromagnetic Fields), and who has NEVER been negatively affected by a wind turbine field, I have to question people who "get sick" from wind turbines. I can FEEL EMF creeping up driving towards lines. I can't visit my best friend because she lives across from a small power junction, and it makes me physically ill, tired, and sore. Wind turbines don't cause ANY of those symptoms. Actually, they cause NO SYMPTOMS to me (and I'm so very sensitive to EVERYTHING thanks to illnesses I have). Once I see conclusive PROOF that wind turbines are bad for people (remember, other countries use wind turbines ALL THE TIME, ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, and there are no concerns about illness, nor has there been reports of it--I've looked).

Farrah Khan is Gideon

Farrah Khan is Gideon Forman’s 20-something NON-EXPERT SECRETARY at Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment ( CAPE ). Khan has ABSOLUTELY NO background, training, or experience concerning FOSSIL FUELS, making her opinions FLAWED, DISTORTED, VALUELESS and WORTHLESS. And Khan has a HUGE VESTED INTEREST IN PERPETUATING IMAGINARY ISSUES. Doing this attracts HUGE SUMS OF PROFIT to her organization, in the form of MEMBERSHIP, DONATIONS, and GOVERNMENT GRANTS. Her employer, CAPE, is a mere FUND-RAISING organization, and NOT a science or research or physician organization. The primary reason for the existence of Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment has NOTHING TO DO WITH HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT but has everything to do with BUSINESS, CASH-FLOW, PROFIT, MEMBERSHIP, DONATIONS, and GOVERNMENT GRANTS. Most CAPE members ARE NOT EVEN PHYSICIANS. In fact, CAPE represents an INFINITESIMALLY SMALL number of doctors. CAPE merely represents LESS THAN 4 PER CENT of all doctors in Canada. http://wp.me/P1jq40-3s4 http://pesticidetruths.com/

So are you saying that a lay

So are you saying that a lay person who has done an indepth study of the effects of tar sands, coal and fossil fuels on health and comparing that to an indepth study of wind energy on health and concluding that the former has been proven much worse for health than the later is negated by the fact that one is not a scientist who specializes in the field. Come on wake up we know that the former is worse than the later. It dosnt take a rocket scientist to determine that. Are you advocating for fossil fuels and saying that they are good for your health. Please do your own research and I wont fault you because your not an expert in the field

If you believe that the

If you believe that the studies done by Sierra, Greenpeace, the United Nations, all the reviews done after the major oil spills, the models done by CMA, and on and on and on, regarding the impacts of coal, oil spills, nuclear accidents, constitute a lack of clinical study on the impact of those contaminants, I have little to say. There are vast bodies of knowledge easily accessed on these impacts and lots of ongoing research. Look how carefully Fukushima impacts are being tracked for example. I assert that there hasn't been a single significant clinical study on the impact of industrial wind on individuals reporting a change in their health. Surely, given that we're spending upwards of $20B in two decades on this technology in Ontario alone, a little $2M clinical study can hardly be called a waste of money. True environmentalists promote and rely on the precautionary principle. People everywhere including Germany, Denmark, Holland - those bastions of green energy - have reported problems. I urge the "Doctors" of CAPE, the poster, and the newspaper to speak directly to any of the many people who have reported negative affects after wind turbine operations began in their communities. Look these people right in the eye, listen to them, and them tell that its just annoyance and they can be better if they get psychiatric care. Go ahead. Do it. As I've said, Dr. King called for more research. CanWEA welcomed the additional of any new research. Doctors and nurses all over the province have called for research (I've spoken to dozens personally) and this "organization" says no to research. I remain deeply offended by CAPE's press release.

The reporter should ask CAPE

The reporter should ask CAPE for a membership list showing the doctors who support their statement. I'll be he doesn't get one.

I am offended by CAPE's

I am offended by CAPE's comments. This 'organization' is against health research??? Even Dr. King's review of existing literature written by Dr. Colby called for MORE research. To date, there has not been a significant clinical study of people reporting health impacts anywhere in the world. Dr. Colby, has to this date, not examined or even spoken with a single individual who has developed a rather extreme case of "annoyance" after industrial wind turbines have become operational. CAPE keeps referring to the 2005 estimating model for deaths in Ontario from coal fired plants in 2012. They don't mention that today, because of increases in zero-emission nuclear, gas, and improvements in hydro couple with lower demand that we are using negligible amounts of coal generation. (less than 2% of total generation). Even if the model is correct, there is no correlation between the use of wind turbines and the use of coal other than coal generation is the cheapest and easiest generation mode that balances the sudden changes in intermittent supply (from wind mostly). There are some power experts that speculate that we might not need any coal generation if we turned off the wind turbines completely. I'm not an engineer so I don't take that as fact. The allegation that nuclear power plants contribute to serious illness is just plain bs. The author of this will probably cite Fukushima or Chernobyl as justification for this irresponsible statement. Here are the facts. We have been using nuclear power in Ontario since 1962. Lifespans in Ontario have increased approximately 25-30% during that time. Nuclear power does not contribute in any way to asthma, CPD, or any of the environmentally caused diseases addressed in the 2005 model. Nuclear power has provide our hospitals with stable power and some of our reactors supply the world with necessary nuclear materials used in modern medical technologies. To claim that we could or should reduce nuclear power because it is a health threat is simply propaganda without any foundation in science. Really? CAPE really believes this?

I think the offended

I think the offended commentator has missed the point of CAPE's release, which is that it is ridiculous to treat wind power as if it was a serious cause of illness on the same plane as coal, nuclear and oil, which have never been treated as the threats that they really are
